LINCOLN CENTER: ATRIUM SHOW WAS ROCKIN’ – STANDING ROOM ONLY

I had a blast performing with Emeline Michel and Buyu Ambroise at Lincoln Center: Atrium. Everybody was dancing and having a great time! What a memorable night!

“Lincoln Center's Target Free Thursdays at the Rubenstein Atrium hosted an extraordinary performance by Emeline Michel and guest artists last evening.
Her special guests--Haitian-born jazz saxophonist Buyu Ambroise and jazz vocalist Pauline Jean, a native New Yorker of Haitian descent--contributed to the program's soulful depth and passion.” Eva YaaAsantewaa

Message from a Fan:

Pauline, You are a great singer. I liked your majestic hairdo and your flowing dress, and especially enjoyed your sassy performance of the song "Yoyo" at the Atrium last week. When I got home I went into the Internet and discovered that your repertoire includes Nina Simone classics (she's one of my musical goddesses). Consider me one more impressed fan :) Please record an album of Haitian traditionals performed with jazz arrangements. It would be a revelation.
Kembe la,
Toto

CD REVIEW IN JAZZWISE - The UK's Biggest Selling Jazz Magazine

Received a great review in the May 2010 Issue of JAZZWISE MAGAZINE. Check it out! See below:

“A New Yorker of Haitian Descent, this debut CD from Berklee alum Pauline Jean impresses on several fronts. Firstly, there's the immediate of her melodious contralto voice, which unfailingly takes you on an emotional ride. Secondly, there's the composing and arranging skills (Jean contributes two fine songs and arranges or co-arranges half a dozen). Finally, there's her adventurousness in terms of repertoire. In addition to the brace of self-penned songs ("Searchin' and "Signature'), the singer's material traverses everything from country star Merle Travis's "Love Must Be Catchin' to imaginatively reworked standards ("Exactly Like You") to Afro-Haitian songs sung in her parents' native tongue, Kreyol. Telling of the struggles and strengths of Haiti's people, Jean's interpretation of singer-songwriter Toto Bissainthe's "Dey/Rasenbleman' (Mourning/Gathering Calls) possesses a heartbreaking poignancy. The singer is already being compared to the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone - no small compliment in itself - but what's most striking about A Musical Offering is the strong sense you get of a singer who is already developing their own sound, their own style, and their own sensibility.” Peter Quinn

“Blessed with good looks, a strong voice and relaxed stage presence, she also revealed notable dramatic range. Pauline Jean made an auspicious UK debut…singer of star potential.” By Jack Massarik

A HEART FOR HAITI

I was scheduled to perform in the 4th edition Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince during the week of Jan 23 thru 27, 2010. I was so excited and honored to be sharing my music in the birthplace of my ancestors. One week prior to the departure date, tragedy struck when a massive earthquake devastated Haiti. That day, January 12th, will always be etched in my memory as a day of unbearable pain and sorrow. In Leogane, my father’s birthplace, 90% of the town is completely destroyed. We have learned that several family members are homeless and injured while some of our cousins have lost their lives, along with countless others. Yet, despite such tragedy, I believe that we must celebrate the lives of those that have perished as well as those that have survived. I am deeply touched by the outpouring support from all over the world and encouraged by the strength of a young woman singing and praising God while she was rescued from the rubble. I am truly fortunate to be a part of an artistic community that is so united and selfless in the aid and relief efforts. So far, we have raised funds for Doctors Without Borders, Yele Haiti and other agencies that are working tirelessly to lighten the burden of the suffering and traumatized Haitian people. This will be an ongoing mission, as it will take years for us to rebuild Haiti. In June 2009, I recorded my arrangement of a Toto Bissainthe song entitled Dey/Rasenbleman (Mourning/Gathering Calls) that is on my debut CD A Musical Offering. The lyrics tell of the struggles and strengths of my people and are so prevalent in light of what just happened. One phrase that has particular strong meaning for me is sèl manman libète, si’l tonbe lap leve. (The only Mother Liberty…if she falls, she will rise!). As the first black republic, Haiti symbolizes freedom and hope. It is my prayer that through this calamity, Haiti will once again be the pearl of the Caribbean. Thank you all so much for donating your time, energy and effort to this cause. Please continue to support, we need you now and we will need you for many years to come. Men anpil, chay pa lou. (Many hands make the load lighter.) - Haitian Proverb Portion of my CD sale will go to the relief efforts of Haiti. Benefit Concert for Leogane coming soon…
